Schools receive trophy for participation in the Recycling Olympiad

In the morning of last Wednesday (13th), the municipal schools of Salto Tourist Resort were awarded by the municipal secretary of the Environment, César Piva, by the municipal secretary of Education, José Carlos Grigoletto, together with the manager of CSO Ambiental, Luiz Paulo Vargas, for participating in the Olympiads of Recycling.

The trophy is a way of thanking and rewarding the teaching units for their commitment to the environmental education project, which in less than a week managed to raise for the city’s cooperative almost two tons of recycled materials of great quality for valorization.

The three schools that collected most were CEMUS III, with 4.25 cubic meters, CEMUS VII, which gathered 3.5 cubic meters, and CEMUS VI, collecting 3.25 cubic meters of recyclable materials.

Grigoletto stressed that the action is important because, in addition to contributing to the environment and increasing the useful life of the city’s landfill, it develops in the children a citizen attitude, the need for effective participation in the maintenance of the city and stimulates the consumption, reflecting more sustainable and healthy habits. “The concept of taking selective collection in schools will continue,” he said.

Secretary César Piva informed that CSO will start the next phase of installation of the underground collection system, the Meclix dumps, in the coming weeks, in front of CEMUS units II, IV, VII, IX, X, XIII and XIV.

buried collection

The underground collection is a simple concept to collect waste production in large cities efficiently. They are boxes of up to 3 thousand liters buried, where the garbage is deposited and it is stored outside the reach of people, animals and climatic changes. This prevents contamination of the soil and contributes to a visibly more beautiful landscape.

By means of probes, the company that uses this equipment is advised when its capacity is at the limit of storage. With fewer trips to collect waste there is also less CO2 release, lower fuel consumption and more safety to the professionals involved in the operation, who do not get in direct contact with the discarded material.

In 2016 the city of Salto started to use the technology to stimulate the separation of recyclable waste through CSO, company. A landmark in waste management in Salto, the creation of eight ecological islands – pairs of underground containers for the disposal of organic and recycled waste – encouraged citizens to participate in the selective collection program.

The success was so great that now the selective collection through the use of underground boxes has been implanted in some municipal schools and stimulates good practices to future generations.
